Weight Loss Program for Men over 40   February 13th, 2010

Weight Loss Journey   January 21st, 2010

I hadn’t been on my bike for some time but I started up again last week. Biking is a great way to get your heart rate up and to give you a heart pumping, sweat producing workout.

Now that I’m back in the seat I’m planning to use biking as one of my fat burning workouts for men over 50.

After a recent trip to the doctor he came back with a bit of bad news. He told me that my bad cholesterol was too high. He told me that it was 149 and that he wanted it to be under 130 for sure and best if it was under 100.

High cholesterol is something that I’m told was given to me by my parents and their parents. There have been times when I’ve gone on a 3 month intense workout program and a very strict diet and found that it didn’t decrease my cholesterol level at all.

So after the report I decided to lower the bad stuff and lose a few pounds in the process. Up to this point it’s going well. I’m down about 9 pounds and I feel great.

I’ve had fun getting on my bike and pedaling on the back roads and coulees in my town. I’m using an interval strategy of training to give me the maximum results along with some hill climbing to really get my heart pumping.

I’ll usually start out riding leisurely for a few blocks just to get my wheels turning and then I start into the interval program. I’ll typically ride fast in highest gear while I’m sitting on the seat of the bike anywhere from 3-6 blocks and then stand up and ride as hard as I can standing up for 2-3 blocks.

After the sprint then I’ll pedal at a medium speed for a block or two and then start all over again.

You can use this strategy at any speed that you start at but what gives you results is that you are changing speed, changing difficulty, and taking your heart rate to different levels.

I’m going to keep using this strategy as one of my fat burning workouts for men over 50 being as how I’ll be 52 within a few months so I do qualify.

If you’re interested in adding some spice to the workout then find a hill or uphill trek of any kind. I really marvel at the guys who are riding in the Tour de France. Those mountain climbs are killers and they are obviously in extraordinary shape.

I’ll be honest, I’m not planning to bike up any mountains anytime soon but I will continue to knock off a few hills and bluff rides.

I may not be a Tour guy but I can really get my heart rate ramped up and speed up the fat burning fireworks on my smaller, shorter rides too. So can you.

There’s many different ways to attack the mountain. Here are a few

  • Gear down and ride as far as you can sitting on the seat. The uphill climb by itself will make you work and get your heart and breathing racing
  • Do the same as before but spend some time standing up on the bike and increasing the speed a bit. More heart and breathing racing
  • Do either of these a few times or do the first one just sitting and the second time up the hill be sure to stand more. Be careful at the start especially is you have not been doing much biking or other working out.

Biking is a great way to work speed and fast heart rate into your workout without the pounding of running.

Give this workout a try whether you’re under 50 or above. Whatever you are it’s guaranteed to give you a great workout and invigorate your entire body.

If you are a man over 50 be sure to add this to your fat burning workouts for men over 50.

Good luck!

Every man wants to have a solid, strong midsection. It’s a look that shouts vitality and health.

Remember looks can be deceiving. Today the rave is 6 pack abs. 6 pack abs certainly look great but are all 6 pack abs strong? Some 6 pack abs can be had by working with gimmicks while real healthy, strong abdominals are most often gotten by working with an effective abdominal exercise routine for men.

Here’s the point. Overall health, real health, always involves total body movement. All bodies crave movement. The healthiest bodies are the result of implementing successful movement into workout routines.

Here’s another important point to exercising yourself to your best health. Intensity and speed almost always play an important part in anyone realizing their most inspired health and fitness gains.

Workouts that emphasize intensity and speed are martial arts punching and kicking bag and air drills, hill and flat sprinting or even fast walking, and certain machine workouts where the emphasis is on explosive bursts of movement.

Moving the entire body not only works a certain body part, the abdominals in this case, but moving the entire body in an explosive fashion works the legs, chest, arms, hips, and strengthens your internal organs as well.

When the entire body in engaged with explosive movement your workout routine qualifies as an abdominal exercise routine for men. Add effective deep breathing and consistent squeezing and tightening of the abs and you’ll see and feel a difference in your ab look and strength.

Have you ever seen an overweight sprinter? Probably not. Sprinters are powerful, lean and strong, and display an entire array of explosive muscle. Not only do they look good but because of their speed and explosive training emphasis they have developed functional muscle.

Functional muscle is more easily developed by putting the body through an exercise routine that strengthens the whole body by working it with movements that are natural to the body.

Having six pack abs is great as long as they are strong and give you the stamina to go for long periods of time in whatever activity that you choose. On the other hand there are many athletes and even every day folks who do not have 6 pack abs but still have tremendously strong, functional midsections.

Your best time spend is not only on developing a look but more importantly on developing body strength and health that serves you well. Choosing an abdominal exercise routine for men that also develops a body that works is what you should look for.

If after working your abdominal exercise program you find that you have developed 6 pack abs good for you. If on the other hand you are working hard, seeing results, feel better, and are happy with your workout routine and the strength and energy that you have gained then what you are doing is working.

To your best health
