Making A Difference   February 26th, 2010

One of my favorite musicians recently passed away. Teddy Pendergrass passed away after complications from a terrible auto accident that had left him paralyzed.
One of his songs was titled Life Is A Song Worth Singing. Great song, great meaning. Here’s a story about a woman who lived her life to the fullest and helped thousands in the process. A real life hero. Enjoy reading about her. She really deserved the award

Have a great weekend

IN MEMORIAM 64 YEARS LATER
The prize doesn’t always go to the most deserving.
Irena Sendler
There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena.
During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the WarsawGhetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.
She had an ‘ulterior motive’. She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews, (being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids).
She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.
During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed.
Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.
Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize…she was not selected.

Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.
It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended. This email is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests  who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated with the German and Russian Peoples looking the other  way!

Now, more than ever, with Iraq , Iran , and others, claiming the Holocaust to be ‘a myth,’ it’s imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who would like to do it again.

This email is intended to reach 40 million people worldwide!

Commit or Die   May 27th, 2009

I saw of Dan Gable speak one time. The first thing that is very obvious from the time that he walks into the room is this guy has an aura of intensity about him. Nothing he does is done half baked. He feels that if you’re going to do it, give it your all.

He spoke about the importance of goals and focus on those goals. In his mind, focus on your goals is an all or nothing thing. It’s sort of like having someone hold a gun to your head and tell you either commit or die.

Sound too intense? It may be, but if you took your goals a bit more seriously, could you accomplish more and become the better you that you have pictured so many times?

I believe that we are capable of more. We just have to let go of the brakes and stop listening to what everyone else thinks is best for us. We really do need to develop our focus and our commitment to another level.

All out focus is important for us in all walks of life.

Kids need it while they are studying for school. All out focus means just that. It doesn’t mean watching your favorite t.v. show while you’re studying for your math test.

Our brain can give 100% focus to only one thing at a time. You can not watch t.v. and focus 100% on studying for your math test. You might be getting 50-50 or even 70-30 but certainly not 100%. Wouldn’t it be interesting to find out what you could do if you gave it 100%?

Focus is important for getting the most out of your workout. All out focus while working out means just that. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people at a health club spend more time talking than working.

It’s that same person that complains about not being able to reach their workout goals. It’s not rocket science. Is it o.k. to say a few words or even carry on a quick conversation between exercises, it may be.

At the same time the more time you spend talking the less time you give yourself to get maximum benefit out of your exercise time.

Here’s another thought about talking as it applies to doing it during an exercise class. It’s distracting to the other people in the class who are trying to get their best and it can be plain old disrespectful if someone is trying to give you directions as to how you can improve your performance.

Lack of focus, talking in this case, causes another problem for you. It takes away from perfect practice. Perfect practice is correct practice done with the proper energy and awareness. It requires attention to detail and feeling awareness of what your body is doing.

Practice does not make perfect, it’s perfect practice that makes perfect. Wouldn’t it be exciting to feel how perfect practice can benefit you rather than just going through the movements?

Life becomes boring and uninspired with continuous half arsed effort. Where is the challenge in that and it’s important to understand that you must be challenged to achieve any type of meaningful participation.

We have two ears and one mouth for a reason. When used the way that they should be they allow our minds and our motivation to grow to unexplored and exhilarating new levels. Less time talking more time focusing, feeling, and becoming aware and improved.

It’s Day 3 of using Interval Training with Walking, Megan.  This time, I’ll help you kick it up a notch.  I’m going to show you how to use what we’ve talked about in the past couple of days on a incline.

This will work for you using a hill in your area or if you prefer to use an inclined treadmill.

When you walk or run on an incline, your muscles use more range of motion and flex more versus walking or running on a flat surface.  Your heart will be ticking especially good when you use the techniques I’ve shown you from the videos from the past few days.

Here’s to a cool cardiovascular workout — all to helping you become a stronger and fitter you.

Must See Workout Video   April 30th, 2009

Walking is a great exercise. Since my hip replacement surgery I’ve made walking a consistent part of my workout program. It’s a great way to get moving and feeling results.

Understand, there are many different ways to walk. I choose to add some spice to the workout by doing interval training.

I can do the training on level ground but I prefer to do it on the hills that surround my house.

Taking it to the hills is a sure way to get your heart going at a higher rate than just walking on level ground.

In today’s first installment of ideas to make walking more challenging and aerobic I discuss a simple program that you can do for a walking or a running routine.

Be sure to take a look and keep watching your email this week because tomorrow I’m going to add a simple but effective twist to this routine.

As with anything, it’s sometimes the subtle changes that end up giving us the biggest winners.

Here’s your video for today:

Stop The Pain   April 30th, 2009

Getting older can be painful, but does it have to be that way.

The more I talk to people who are past 40 the more I am enlightened as to the many daily aches and pains that some folks suffer.

I’m no stranger to aches and pains and you certainly by now have heard me tell about my total hip replacement and the growing arthritis that I have in my other hip, but even still I feel that my pains are minor compared to some folks.

In these conversations over time I continue to hear about people who have sore wrists, forearms, and fingers. It seems that our high tech world is really taking its toll on those who sit and work at computers for a living.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a very real, painful condition that is becoming more and more common place.

The cure, or at least an aid for many pains of the body, can be found in exercise. Specific exercises can cure the body as well as the spirit.

I find it interesting that people in the States seem to put as much faith in pills and surgeries as they do in the benefits of keeping a healthy body.

Many in China believe that the body can heal itself of ailments if it is given the opportunity. Simple exercises and natural cures have brought many people back to health.

A few years back I was fortunate to find a person who is very knowledgeable about things concerning the body and the miracles that it can perform to keep itself healthy.

Matt Furey has proven to be a knowledgeable teacher who is continually searching for ways to help people become and stay healthy.

A while back after one of his trips to China, Matt has a second home in China, he came back with a simple yet effective cure for the pains of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

I’m told that Carpal Tunnel pain can be very unpleasant. I’m told that it causes people to lose sleep, stops them from doing simple everyday activities, and that the pain is constant.

Now there is a cure and no need for anyone to keep suffering needlessly.

The cure is a series of simple, effective exercises that anyone can do to relieve themselves of this nagging pain.

If you yourself suffer from this pain or you know someone who does and you’d like it to STOP than it would be in your best interest to go to
www.CarpalTunnelFix.com

Sometimes the answers to our challenges are very simple. All we need to do is reach out and find them. Matt has found something that can help you be pain free. Take some time to discover Matt and how his knowledge can stop your pain.

The Effects of Our Environment   April 16th, 2009

Sometimes it’s as plain as the nose on our face but we don’t see it.

A few months back while in Cancun with some friends I was talking to one of the guys and he told me that he coached 6th grade basketball

He told me that he had one of the kids on his team who was also in our Karate program.

He said that when basketball season started in October that he and the other coaches noticed that this young guy was much more focused, energetic, and had an edge. They had not seen this before.

He went on to say that as the season progressed that the energy that they had seen in October slowly diminished. Within four months time the young man had returned to an uninspired habit of putting forth little energy. The passion was gone.

I told him that the boy had stopped coming to classes in October.

Hmmm…

Kids and adults need to be placed in positive environments. Environments where they can be challenged but still feel safe. Consistent reinforcement of positive habits by parents, teachers, and others who influence makes the difference.

Parents need to realize that even the most well meaning and skilled parents can’t teach their kids everything. When they find teachers and role models who can make a difference, let them do their job.

Sometimes I wonder how a person can watch the energy drain away from a child. Take a moment and look closer.

There’s always a reason why things go south. Have the courage and the insight to make the right choices for yourself and those you love.

Simple Solutions   April 16th, 2009

Sometimes it feels as if people are looking for some kind of a magic formula for fitness, success, happiness, and life in general.
In most cases it’s not a magic formula at all, but instead the magic that comes from practicing simple formulas.
Here’s a few examples:

  1. You want to become healthier: Simple formula – Eat more fruits and vegetables, try not to overeat, drink water, exercise on a regular basis www.CombatEnduranceTraining.com
  2. You want your son/daughter to experience happiness and success in their lives: Simple formula – Teach them the values of respect, self-discipline, accountability, learning how to make mistakes, and not worrying about what others might say or think.
  3. You want to improve your job position- Simple formula – Offer more to your work then you have offered in the past. Go above and beyond the call of duty. What if your employer doesn’t notice, it’s ok, you and everyone else knows how valuable you’ve chosen to become. If your advancement is not with your present company you’ve just made yourself more marketable .You’ve changed your mindset and your energy.
  4. You want to learn how to relax and unwind- Simple formula – Breathe deeply everyday, go for a walk, listen to your favorite music, spend time with your favorite people, and listen to quiet.

The things that can really make a difference in our lives are FREE.

Finding Wisdom   April 15th, 2009

Anyone can make it a point to make learning a life long activity.

It’s in our make up to want to learn and grow and there are so many ways that we can do it.

Two of the ways that I find that help me to achieve that goal are reading books and listening to audio tapes. I have found that there is no limit to what I can learn if only I make the effort to do so.

One of the things that I have found to be most helpful is to find authors who have experience in the real world. Theory isn’t worth a darn unless it’s got some basis in the real world.

There are plenty of authors talking about things that they think work in the real world, but fact is, they wouldn’t know real world if it bit them in the backside.

Just recently I finished reading a book by someone who I have heard much about as of late. His name is Steve Chandler and the book that I read is Reinventing Yourself

Chandler talks about how anyone can change themselves and live the life that they desire if they are willing to accept the fact that their personalities are not set in stone.

Much of what he talks about is the need to search for and find passion and spirit in life.

The human spirit has the potential to spread like a wild fire to everyone and everything around it. Wouldn’t it be worth all of our time to create the world that we are capable of creating?

Chandler’s book is a remarkable read. If you are a person who is always looking for ways and ideas that can lend an energy to your life then I would highly recommend that you pick yourself up a copy of Revinventing Yourself on Amazon.com

A New You   April 15th, 2009

How do you feel when you do something that you had not done before? You take a chance and move forward and do something that helps you grow and also helps those around you?
It all starts very simply.
It all starts with an idea.
Last week I told you about the fundraiser that we did at my Karate school to raise clothes for kids.

The idea started innocently enough after a conversation that I had after one of my Combat classes.
I asked the person who I had talked to, who also happened to be a guidance counselor in a middle school, to send me over a list of items that she needed for kids in her school.
The list was sent and I decided to have a meeting with parents in my Karate school and other interested adults. The turnout was great.
As we talked I suggested that we might consider doing this for more than one school and before we were done planning we had planned a project that would help all elementary and middle schools in 3 school districts.
You might ask, how did I know it would work?
I believed.
With the help of many excited and very hard working organizers and volunteers the event turned out to be a huge success. When the day was done we had collected 3619 lbs of clothing, personal hygiene products, and food for area school districts. Plans are already in the works for the next one.
Here’s some of the things that could be taken from this venture.

  1. Don’t listen to people if they tell you that the sky is falling. Get moving to make a change. Any forward movement is better than nothing
  2. Don’t worry about whether or not it will work. Just the fact that you have an idea and you’re willing to breathe some life into it is all that most situations need
  3. Every moment you spend on earth is important. Do something to grow and make a difference
  4. Do something to touch your own spirit and the spirit of those around you.

I also took videos of the event. Take a look and feel the fire that everyone had who was there helping us make this a great day for area kids.
