Shake My Head In Disbelief   February 25th, 2010

Sometimes you see and hear about things that just make you wonder. Over the past few days I’ve come upon some things that made me want to just shake my head and shake somebody.
Here’s a few good rants for you. See whether you agree or disagree.
As you know I’ve spent the last 32 years working with and helping children become physically and mentally stronger and achieve their potential.
I’ve gotta tell you some of these kids face some real uphill battles.
When I watch how kids interact with each other and with authority figures. I can usually tell within the first few minutes what kind of a young person he/she is. You can tell by how they treat their friends, by how they respond to authority, and whether or not they listen and pay attention when people talk to them.
All of the things I look for are practices that have been taught to them by an adult, usually a parent or parents.
It’s hard enough to be a kid. It’s important that they get good information and proper guidance. Some of these kids will struggle forever because of the downright stupid guidance they are getting.
Here’s some examples:

  1. When a child is doing something that he/she should not be doing, someone please take notice and correct it. Do not be afraid to hurt the child’s feelings. You’ll be hurting much more than that if a child is left to do whatever he/she wants until they are adults and then get absolutely crushed when the real world finally hits them over the head.
  2. If a child has a long history of not paying attention and just can’t seem to get the information right no matter how many times it’s explained, it might be time to have the child tested for some type of learning challenge. Sure none of us want to feel that our kids might have learning difficulties, but how fare is it to them if they do and we don’t take steps to help them cure the issue.

Kids do not know how to act unless they are taught. Parenting is not a spectator sport. It’s an all the time, get involved and help your kids occupation Rudeness, lack of respect, inappropriate behavior, and entitlement. All of these are things that must be nipped in the bud and not tolerated.
I feel for teachers today.
Many of these people have chosen their profession because they love kids and want to teach them things that will change their lives. It’s a big time sacrifice and the good teachers are to be commended.
So why are so many teachers frustrated and why do many choose to find other fields of work after short times on the job.
What would happen if government would mind their own business and not create ridiculous rules and paperwork for teachers to live up to. Case in point
No Child Left Behind.
Whose bright idea was this. Do you know that we are graduating kids from our high schools who can’t read? How does that qualify as not being left behind. Seems to me that beefing up our graduating statistics is more important than giving kids an education.
How about keeping lawyers off of the playground and make some laws to stop some of them from running around looking for ridiculous cases to try that only jam up our legal system and spend money foolishly
Case in point. Not so long ago I read a news story that told about one set of parents who was taking a 5 year old child to court because that 5 year old had gotten in a fist fight with theirs.
Here’s what should happen. Case comes to court. Judge hears that it’s parents and a lawyer of one 5 year old taking another 5 year old to court for a fight on the playground and judge says:
“This is too ridiculous to try and by the way you stupid parents and stupid lawyer will also be fined $xxxxx for even bringing this in front of me.”
There’s a thought. Hold someone accountable for being stupid and spreading their stupidity around the town.
We live in a strange world. It’s a world where many kids do not respect authority. It’s a world where lack of common sense is common place. It’s a world where people are restricted from doing their best jobs because there are too many dumb rules and regulations stopping them from doing what’s right. It’s a world where some people are afraid to do or say what’s right because they are afraid that they might upset someone who in turn will bring them unneeded legal pains.
The cure for all of this insanity seems simple:

  1.  Say or do something if there’s a wrong being done. Speak up. Take action
  2.  Teach kids how to do the right things by setting an example
  3. Make laws that make sense
  4. Reward creativity and resourcefulness and frown on entitlement and stupidity

It’s high time we start making sense and helping our kids and our world come back to the basics.
Common sense makes good sense even though it may not be common. We need a bunch more of it.

Kids Do The Most Incredible Things   December 8th, 2008

Kids really do the most incredible things. Over the years working with young martial artists I’ve had that point driven home to me many times.

I’ve often watched 8 and 9 year olds going through very difficult Black Belt tests and marveled at their ability to not only remember the techniques that are required, but also perform the techniques to high levels of proficiency.

Friends and family members who come to these testings who have never seen a Black Belt test before sit on the edge of their chairs watching with excitement and disbelief.

Kids are the coolest. They don’t have all of the stored up junk in their heads, like so many adults do, that keeps them from really progressing by leaps and bounds. Kids usually don’t worry about things that will never happen.

Kids still know how to utilize their creative imaginations. Watch them play sometime and watch them create out of nowhere. It really is something to see how they come up with things that are both interesting and unusual.

A while back I got together with some of my young Karate instructors and gave them a piece of music. The music was Charlie Daniels, “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.”

I told my young national champion, Mr. Cornell, that this music is something that would really get a crowd worked up and stomping their feet.

He took the music and came up with a choreographed set of intricately timed martial arts movements that has brought every crowd that we’ve ever done this presentation to to their feet and given the kids a standing ovation.

I’d like you to get a chance to see it. I think it’s a perfect example of the passion and energy that every young person, or older person for that matter, can produce if they have the desire to practice and create something special.

All of these young people consistently work out to give themselves that little bit extra that all of us should strive for. All of these young people are also advanced practitioners of the Combat Endurance Training program. You can find out why this works for them by going to www.CombatEnduranceTraining.com

Now sit yourself down and take a few moments to view this video. After you’ve seen it I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at maaweb@RockSolidKids.info, Subject- martial arts demo and let me know what you thought.

P.S. I could use your help. After you watch the Devil Went Down To Georgia you could help me out by sending it to your friends to watch. I’m proud of these kids. These are some special young people and I’m sure others would be happy to see their talent.

P.S.S. Be sure to check your e mail Monday because I’m going to introduce you to a little girl who is a 9 year old Black Belt at my Karate school. You will want to see what she does. You won’t believe it. Trust me, I won’t let you down.

No Fear   November 12th, 2008

Fear is the enemy. Many times people fall short of reaching their potential because they fear things that in all likelihood will never happen.

I remember sitting on a chair at my wife’s grandma’s house watching my 7 month old son play on the floor. He had been lifting himself up on furniture for months and we were wondering when he would take his first steps

Then it happened.

He let go of the piece of furniture that he was clinging to and off he went. He walked across the whole length of grandma’s living room. He was 7 months old that day.

We all watched in disbelief because from what we had been told no baby walks at such an early age. We were proud. Our Superbaby had defied all odds.

From that point on he was hell on wheels with a big, bright smile that showed how proud he was of his new found get around the house skills.

That was almost 19 years ago and our Superbaby is now in college off on his own. How time flies.

I remember watching him bound across that floor and seeing the passion and happiness in his face. He let out a loud, happy baby shriek and he was going for it. No concern whatsoever about falling flat on his face and failing.

He knew the feeling of failing, too, because he had fallen in every attempt before. Wait a minute. In his baby mind, he must not have thought it to have been failure when he crashed to the floor.

After every setback, he would grab onto something and give it another go. Since that day he has hit the floor running and had a beautiful life. I’m sure that he is not aware of how important it was for him to get up after every baby crash.

I hope and pray that he has the same attitude about not giving up through difficult times in his adult life.

I see it everyday. Kids and adults who are scared to death. Scared to death of putting themselves in the arena and trying something new. How is it that they have forgotten the lesson of the baby’s first steps.

What if we could remember that same energy and happiness of our first steps? Go back far enough and I’m sure that it’s locked in your mind somewhere.

It’s the same for being trained to go to the bathroom on your own. It’s the same for riding your bike by yourself for the first time.

We all have those success stories. We have things in our lives that we were really good at no matter how simple we may think they are today. IT DOESN’T MATTER. You did it and it’s important you use 12pt successes to springboard you to bigger ones.

Teddy Roosevelt, one of our greatest Presidential leaders, may have said it best.

(I’ll paraphrase)

“Better to tried and have failed then to never have known the thrill of being in the arena and having given it your best shot”

Rock on Teddy!

Why do some choose to live lives of quiet desperation when they could live lives filled with passion, energy, and creating special things? All it takes is putting one foot in front of the other and moving in the right direction.
