F..O..C..U..S   May 10th, 2010

A while ago I was working with some young people in martial arts class. All of these boys and girls were beginning students who are working hard to improve their martial arts skills. As the class went on I continually talked to the kids about the importance of FOCUS.
I don’t even know how many times I use the word in class but after working with kids for my entire adult life I realize that it is the key that unlocks many doors to success.

Kids who can center their attention on the task at hand, listen when others are speaking, and use their eyes and ears more than their mouths are often times more likely to experience success, confidence, powerful self image, and an ability to overcome challenges when they are presented.
As I worked with the kids I also mentioned the value of having a strong body. I explained that all it takes to get one’s body healthy and strong is a desire to do so, a plan to follow, and the motivation to get moving.

I joked with them that all too many people are spending too much time working, actually not working, their butt muscles by sitting down and not doing much of anything.
Kids love movement. Watch them on the playground sometime and see how they are running and laughing.

Movement is a sure way to energize the body as well as the mind and help a person believe in his/her own power and potential. Taking care of the body is a sure way to keep your mind and spirit at optimum functioning capacity and keep a person thinking about and working towards bigger and better things.
It’s easy to talk to kids about dreaming big. They do it quite naturally. It’s only when they become adults that many times they listen to others about how they should be doing things and forget the importance of movement and using their imagination.

We adults can really learn from how young people think and use their imaginations. Giving power to our imaginations and thinking about the big things that we are capable of gives us a power that can lead to things that others find hard to even imagine.
To your big thoughts,

The Busier You Get   February 22nd, 2010

Seems that the more we create things the more things pop up for us to do. There always seems to be an opportunity to improve your station in life if you keep moving and looking for opportunities.

If you saw my video this past weekend you heard that things are really ramping up around here. We’re busy redoing our old website and creating new ones.

I’m very excited about our new www.WomenStrengthTraining.com website. I know that there are many women, especially those over 40, who are looking for ways to stay healthy and live their best lives. This will be fun.

The kids at the grade school are doing great and I started shooting video this morning. Our next step is to keep gathering video and written data for this program with the intention to send some of this already proven program evidence to our politicians so they can stop wondering what to do and just do what’s already working for kids and fitness.

Here’s my latest opportunity and I can use your help if you are available tomorrow morning at 8:30 am CST.

I’m going to be the featured speaker on the Bicycle Nut Radio Show. You can listen in at the following location www.blogtalkradio.com/the-bicycle-nut If you’d like to do more than listen you can also be on the show.

I’m going to be talking about core strength and proper breathing as my main topics. If you would like to call in and give some feedback on any of my Combat Endurance Training programs for other listeners to hear about I would really appreciate it.

As always, having you give proof to show that what I talk about works is better than if I say it. It would be great if you could do this live radio testimonial. Here’s the phone # for you to call if you are interested 1-347-324-3835

My friend Jerry Goodwin is the host of the program and from what I understand he and I will talk about certain topics to help bike riders improve their riding between 8:30 and 9:10. At that time we will open up the phone lines to answer questions and to have you call in with your Combat Success Stories.

I hope you can make it to the call. If you don’t want to make the whole call then try to get in on the last 20 minutes. Your help would be appreciated.

Talk soon

Return To Focus   January 6th, 2010

Have you ever seen a young person who doesn’t feel very confident? You can see it in the way that they hold their body, how they talk to others, and the challenges that they are willing or not willing to accept.

I’ve seen many kids who’ve come to my Karate school who are bashful and unsure of themselves at first, but who later grow to be confident leaders in the martial arts school, in their schools, in their social groups, and in all areas of their lives.

Most of these kids have learned and practice a few simple but effective habits. They include:

  1. Not worrying about making mistakes. They’ve learned that making mistakes is o.k. and the only way that we grow is by learning new things and taking chances.
  2. They’ve learned to look and listen. We call it train your mind, train your body.
  3. Little things don’t distract them. Things happen. It’s important to press on.
  4. They know how to practice. It’s inspiring to see young people who can do what is asked of them without anyone having to stand over them to make sure that it’s getting done.
  5. They take pride in their accomplishments and who they are as people. They understand that you’ve got to stand for something, may as well make it something worthwhile.
  6. They understand the importance of treating themselves and others with respect and dignity. It works. The world would be a better place if everyone learned a bit more of this.

It’s a great reminder for even adults to remember and use.

Commit or Die   May 27th, 2009

I saw of Dan Gable speak one time. The first thing that is very obvious from the time that he walks into the room is this guy has an aura of intensity about him. Nothing he does is done half baked. He feels that if you’re going to do it, give it your all.

He spoke about the importance of goals and focus on those goals. In his mind, focus on your goals is an all or nothing thing. It’s sort of like having someone hold a gun to your head and tell you either commit or die.

Sound too intense? It may be, but if you took your goals a bit more seriously, could you accomplish more and become the better you that you have pictured so many times?

I believe that we are capable of more. We just have to let go of the brakes and stop listening to what everyone else thinks is best for us. We really do need to develop our focus and our commitment to another level.

All out focus is important for us in all walks of life.

Kids need it while they are studying for school. All out focus means just that. It doesn’t mean watching your favorite t.v. show while you’re studying for your math test.

Our brain can give 100% focus to only one thing at a time. You can not watch t.v. and focus 100% on studying for your math test. You might be getting 50-50 or even 70-30 but certainly not 100%. Wouldn’t it be interesting to find out what you could do if you gave it 100%?

Focus is important for getting the most out of your workout. All out focus while working out means just that. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people at a health club spend more time talking than working.

It’s that same person that complains about not being able to reach their workout goals. It’s not rocket science. Is it o.k. to say a few words or even carry on a quick conversation between exercises, it may be.

At the same time the more time you spend talking the less time you give yourself to get maximum benefit out of your exercise time.

Here’s another thought about talking as it applies to doing it during an exercise class. It’s distracting to the other people in the class who are trying to get their best and it can be plain old disrespectful if someone is trying to give you directions as to how you can improve your performance.

Lack of focus, talking in this case, causes another problem for you. It takes away from perfect practice. Perfect practice is correct practice done with the proper energy and awareness. It requires attention to detail and feeling awareness of what your body is doing.

Practice does not make perfect, it’s perfect practice that makes perfect. Wouldn’t it be exciting to feel how perfect practice can benefit you rather than just going through the movements?

Life becomes boring and uninspired with continuous half arsed effort. Where is the challenge in that and it’s important to understand that you must be challenged to achieve any type of meaningful participation.

We have two ears and one mouth for a reason. When used the way that they should be they allow our minds and our motivation to grow to unexplored and exhilarating new levels. Less time talking more time focusing, feeling, and becoming aware and improved.

Strong Legs Strong Heart   May 27th, 2009

Strong legs, strong heart. True some of the time but not always.

Years ago one of my students was a very successful marathon runner. Not just your average do it once in a while or once in a lifetime marathon runner, but he was very competitive and even qualified for the Boston and Chicago marathons in his age bracket.

I remember the first day that he went to a sparring class.

After about one minute of moving around and throwing his technique and having another person shoot techniques out at him this very well conditioned marathon runner could hardly move.

Not only could he not move but his breathing was so labored that he struggled to stand up and walk.
The point is not all conditioning is the same.

Next point. If you want to be truly healthy and strong employ some type of speed and explosiveness training into your workouts.

There’s many great reasons for doing this type of workout.

Some of the best are it’s a great fat burning workout, it keeps you young, and it gives you energy and stamina as if you had been drinking from the fountain of eternal youth.

Today’s video gives you some ideas on what to do with your legs to make your heart strong. This is right to the point stuff that’s guaranteed to take you to another level of fitness if you’re willing to give it a go.

Getting To The Next Level   April 27th, 2009

Progress is often times slow. It can be especially slow after a person has experienced a certain level of success.

It’s usually those with the most persistence and the clearest vision of what they want to accomplish that are able to continue on during these slower periods of growth.

At times progress may seem slow or even non existent but there are changes going on even if not as evident. More importantly there is a commitment and development of strong habit that is also being developed.

One of the guys who has been in my local Combat Endurance Training program for almost a year asked a very important question.

He asked what type of goals that he should be striving for now that he feels really good physically and has met many of the goals that he set out to accomplish.

It’s a great question and I told him that there are always changes to the exercises that can be done as well as implementing some new training techniques. Change after all is good for our bodies and our minds.

I also suggested that even though he has achieved many of his goals it’s important to continue on with this program as a foundation for his health and fitness. I went on to say that the results that he has gotten are very real and something that he should be proud of.

Over time I’ve seen all sorts of people wanting to achieve many different fitness and lifestyle goals. It interests me to see how many want the magic cure and immediate results.

I’ve had people ask me how long they need to do something physical. I have to laugh and suggest to them that health and fitness is not something that can be stored up and used whenever you need a hit, but instead must be something that is continuously worked on and refreshed.

There are no magic cures. The only fool proof system that I know of for lifetime health and fitness is one where the person sticks to some type of exercise and changes and adapts it over time.

Pick something that you can work with and that you know will give you results. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Find it, stick to it, and be happy with your results.

The Effects of Our Environment   April 16th, 2009

Sometimes it’s as plain as the nose on our face but we don’t see it.

A few months back while in Cancun with some friends I was talking to one of the guys and he told me that he coached 6th grade basketball

He told me that he had one of the kids on his team who was also in our Karate program.

He said that when basketball season started in October that he and the other coaches noticed that this young guy was much more focused, energetic, and had an edge. They had not seen this before.

He went on to say that as the season progressed that the energy that they had seen in October slowly diminished. Within four months time the young man had returned to an uninspired habit of putting forth little energy. The passion was gone.

I told him that the boy had stopped coming to classes in October.

Hmmm…

Kids and adults need to be placed in positive environments. Environments where they can be challenged but still feel safe. Consistent reinforcement of positive habits by parents, teachers, and others who influence makes the difference.

Parents need to realize that even the most well meaning and skilled parents can’t teach their kids everything. When they find teachers and role models who can make a difference, let them do their job.

Sometimes I wonder how a person can watch the energy drain away from a child. Take a moment and look closer.

There’s always a reason why things go south. Have the courage and the insight to make the right choices for yourself and those you love.

P.S. A strong physical training program changes bodies and minds. Believing in ourselves and feeling empowered is worth every bit of effort. Check out www.CombatEnduranceTraining.com for yourself. This program gets results Right Now

P.S.S. Mentors find their way to us in all forms. Having nose to nose contact and being able to spend time with a mentor is ideal. In cases where that doesn’t work it’s good to seek out the teachings of mentors in books, audios, and videos. Here’s another great, easy read for you.  The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. Watch The Eyes   March 27th, 2009

What happens to kids who can keep their eyes, ears, and concentration on the person talking to them.

The obvious answer is that they will do better in all things that they do.

That sounds ok but I don’t believe that it moves you the way that it should.

The answer to the question, what happens to kids who learn how to keep their eyes, ears, and concentration on the person talking to them is.

These Skills Change Their Lives.

Here’s why I know. I work with many kids and see many kids who are challenged to sit still and keep their eyes and ears on task. It seems that the easy solution is to medicate those kids who are so challenged.

Even though there is a time and place for medication the most valuable aid for any child is to

Practice Learning How To Focus

Children who are able to Center their attention on the task at hand invariably

  1. Have more friends
  2. Do better in school
  3. Do better in sports
  4. Encounter more opportunities
  5. Have more confidence
  6. Are willing to accept more difficult challenges
  7. Most importantly- They Feel Better About Themselves

It’s a good thing to help our kids start practicing Focus at too early an age.

It will pay huge dividends for our kids.

Enjoy this video. This is one of our 5 year old girls in the Karate school.

What Do You Think?   March 14th, 2009

“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.”
-Mahatma Gandhi

We already have the most powerful computer sitting on top of our shoulders. Now all we have to do is program it correctly.

There in lies the struggle. Every day becomes a challenge to not let things that might distract us from our goals get into our heads.

I’ve recently had some questions come in asking about what are some tricks that I use to stay motivated and upbeat. Great question.

I make it an effort to be very single minded when it comes to my goals. Some people say that I’m too intense at times but I don’t know any other way. I don’t believe that you can be wishy, washy about things that really matter to you.

One of the ways that I find is useful to stay on track is to have a very clear picture of what I want. I already see what the end result is and I don’t let distractions steer me away from the goal.

Put simply it’s a matter of staying focused and remembering why you started the journey in the first place. It’s also a good idea to think about how you might feel and look when the thing that you strive for is finally achieved.

Your energy, spirit, and your brain’s capacity are three sure fire tools to put into gear to fearlessly pursue the result that you desire
