The Power Of Progress   February 17th, 2010

Over the past few days I’ve received emails from different people saying that they are making it a point to do something about their fitness. They want to do something to improve it.
One of the emails that I received was from a man who said that he is about to turn 50 and feels that he has to lose the extra 50 lbs that he has managed to put on. He went on to say that it’s been a very stressful year and he knows it’s time for positive change.
Good for him and good for everyone who is willing to take the necessary steps to improve in some way. Earlier today I wrote a message on my Facebook account about how Entitlement is a robber of the spirit.
Those who feel that they should just be given everything without earning the right or working for something will never know the satisfaction of achieving.
Achievement comes because of the effort and energy that the individual is willing to put forth.
Achievement never happens to those who sit on their arses and complain about why the world is so tough on them.
Movement often times requires that we go through pain. It’s the pain of learning something new, stumbling, and not knowing all of the answers.
Those who continue through the pain come out on the other end better and more able to face even bigger challenges.
The challenge to be in shape and fight through whatever barriers or distractions we might encounter is well worth our effort. It’s in the effort and pain that we achieve things that many will never know.

Watching In Disbelief   September 28th, 2009

Fire breathing monsters all around with evil intentions in their minds. Thousands watching nearby with millions more watching in the comfort of their own homes.

It just shouldn’t happen but as luck would have it, it did.

The play starts on the 32 yard line and he goes back, eludes pressure, and throws from the 39 yard line. It’s ten more yards to the far corner of the end zone. The distance doesn’t really matter because this ball is thrown like a frozen rope. It could have made it to 60 yards and beyond.

This is something that a soon to be 40 year old should not be able to do. When it’s all said and done there are two seconds left in the game and he has once again done the imaginable and willed his team to victory.

He may no longer be my quarterback. As I was watching the count down of the Minnesota Viking game yesterday I was excited to know that my Packers would soon be in a first place tie with the “more than ever hated Vikings” but not so fast.

I may not agree with how this whole thing went down between Brett Favre and the Packers and I really don’t like the idea that he is now playing for the arch enemy, but I have to give credit where credit is due.

This guy really is amazing.

40 years old in October. From many fitness standards there are a growing number of people who have packed in their fitness dreams by the time they are 40. Brett will soon become the poster boy for the over 40 age group with a message of if there’s a will to stay healthy, there most certainly is a way.

The rest of us, normal humans, those of us who are not being chased by 300 lb plus monsters and being asked to be the most clutch of clutch with only seconds left, must realize that there is only one Favre. At the same time the rest of us can still fight the good fight and guarantee ourselves a long life with many healthy returns.

This is not rocket science. Move your body on a regular basis, eat things that are good for you, breathe deeply every day, and believe in your possibilities.

In case you’re wondering this little bit of daily magic can be done in 9 minutes a day. Check it out at www.combatendurancetraining.com/9MinDVD.php

I hope he starts acting his age by this coming Monday. For some reason I just don’t see it happening. Go Pack Go!

No Time To Start   June 26th, 2009

Time is the thing that all of us wish we had more of. All of us start on the same playing field with a 24 hour allotment everyday.

The thing that separates those of us who have productive days from those who don’t is finding time to do the most important things and finding time for ourselves (a very important thing)

One of the best “me times” that I find is the time to make sure that I exercise. Sometimes my days are crammed full and it’s a struggle to do the exercises that I want. At the same time, I still want to do something.

In my morning Combat class last night and this morning I showed everyone a superset. I explained that if you are ever having one of those days when there is no extra time here is a quick set of 4 exercises that you can do.

Spending even 3-4 minutes getting your heart going and your breathing accelerated beats the heck out of doing nothing.

There’s something even better than 3-4 minutes.. Check it out in today’s video.

See the video here.

Island of Positive   June 17th, 2009

With so much negativity in the world, you have to make sure that you isolate yourself from the things that will intentionally or even unintentionally bring you down.

Over the last 30 years I’ve had my karate school, we’ve always valued the importance of creating an Island of Positive.

This is where our students and families can be a part of our Martial Arts Family and really benefit from the positive environment we create.

You deserve to put yourself in a positive place.  You definitely do not want to put yourself in a situation where the things (maybe even people) around you bring you down.

Check out my message for you on creating your very own Island of Positive.

Hammerhead   June 4th, 2009

A hammerhead is the name given to a shark whose head happens to look quite a bit like a hammer. A hammerhead is also a name given to someone who sees things only one way.

Last week I was speaking to someone who gave me their opinion about why weight lifting is more valuable than body weight exercise and why it’s the only way to go.

After I had listened to my weight lifting crusader talk about weight lifting being the only way to gain strength and power I finally got my few minutes to make my point.

I suggested that using your body as the only weight when you exercise is also an effective way to gain strength and power. I conceded that weight lifting also has it’s place but I made a very strong point for training with body weight exercises.

I said that I have found that body weight training is very functional and effective in that it makes a person more aware and comfortable with natural movement of the body. I also believe that body weight training is easier on the body than heavy weight lifting.

I mentioned that body weight exercises are effective and safe for young people who want to gain power and strength but whose bodies are still not fully developed and able to take some of the shock of heavy lifting.

I talked about how effective body weight exercises are for adults who are past 40 years of age and want to train without the threat of injury and also want to build strength, power, and speed.

When I was finished making my points the Hammerhead was still a Hammerhead and believed that weights were the only way to go.

The Moral- Don’t be a Hammerhead. Body Weight training works.

Simple Things/ Big Difference   May 27th, 2009

It’s why we have two ears and one mouth. We’re supposed to listen more than we talk.

I had a chance to do that last week and I learned a lot. I made phone calls to some of you on my e mail list and I found out quite a bit. After you talked I was able to give you some answers to the questions that you had about fitness.

One of the main questions was “How do I get motivated?”

Here’s a few thoughts that can help with motivation

  1. You can be healthy and strong and you owe it to yourself to live your best life.
  2. Stop thinking and start doing. One small step is better than no steps and a lot of thinking.
  3. Don’t worry if you do it right just do it. The fact that you are starting to move in the right direction very often gives you the motivation to go on to bigger and better things.
  4. Believe that you can achieve your goal and see and believe with passion in your mind. See the goal as being completed.

Later this week I’m going to make some more videos that will give you some more ideas on how you can achieve your best fitness.

Watch you email for Thursday to see the new video health ideas.

Strong Legs Strong Heart   May 27th, 2009

Strong legs, strong heart. True some of the time but not always.

Years ago one of my students was a very successful marathon runner. Not just your average do it once in a while or once in a lifetime marathon runner, but he was very competitive and even qualified for the Boston and Chicago marathons in his age bracket.

I remember the first day that he went to a sparring class.

After about one minute of moving around and throwing his technique and having another person shoot techniques out at him this very well conditioned marathon runner could hardly move.

Not only could he not move but his breathing was so labored that he struggled to stand up and walk.
The point is not all conditioning is the same.

Next point. If you want to be truly healthy and strong employ some type of speed and explosiveness training into your workouts.

There’s many great reasons for doing this type of workout.

Some of the best are it’s a great fat burning workout, it keeps you young, and it gives you energy and stamina as if you had been drinking from the fountain of eternal youth.

Today’s video gives you some ideas on what to do with your legs to make your heart strong. This is right to the point stuff that’s guaranteed to take you to another level of fitness if you’re willing to give it a go.

Making Magic   February 12th, 2009

There’s a whole boatload of magic everywhere you look. All you have to do is take a closer look.

Before we get to the magic let me sidetrack for a moment to something that’s far from being magic. It hits me in the face every time I pick up the morning newspaper, listen to the radio, or turn on the tv.

You guessed it. The sky is falling.

Don’t these boneheads who tell us these stories have anything better to do than scare the hell out of everyone. It must give them some sort of unusual pleasure to put the world on edge.

Perfect example of power used in the wrong way.

Let’s straighten a few things out.

The sky is not falling. Everything will work out. Don’t believe everything you hear and certainly don’t make it your reality even if some of it might be true.

I heard something else yesterday that really got the hair on my neck standing on end. It was the leader of the Free World saying that “government can’t do everything”

No S..t Nor do we want it to.

How about get out of my way and encourage folks to take care of and create their own lives. “Government can’t do everything” Give me a break. What if businesses were run like government. We’d all be broke and looking for a handout.

One last rant. You don’t make a bad thing good by throwing more money at it. Nuff said.

Here’s to the magic. A few instances

Tuesday night I was at my Karate school and we were taking pictures and videos of the kids all night long. You want energy. Wow. Those kids were smokin’.

Keep a sharp eye out cause we’re going to be sending lots of pictures and videos in emails and on our sites over the coming months. It’s our little way of firing up anyone who wants to be fired up.

Many of the kids we photographed last night know how to flip a switch. They can be silly and have fun one minute, just be kids, and then when asked to get after it and start performing they know just what to do. In short, they know how to work for what they want.

What they want is to get better and feel good about themselves.

We’ve got kids as young as 4 years old who are getting it. They know that it’s about their choices. Getting strong and healthy and feeling good about who they are and what they want to become has a lot to do with their vision for their lives.

I think I’ll send a few of the kids to Washington. Come on Fred. Stay on track here.

Earlier today I spent some time working with William Cornell my chief instructor who just happens to be a national and world champion. We’ll send some more videos of him working out just to give you something to get excited about.

We spent about 40 minutes mixing Combat Endurance, kicking and punching, and stretching into a very concentrated, very intense workout.

He feels and looks strong. He made a decision to be that way. He’s a great role model for the kids and adults in the Karate school and it’s no wonder that more and more of them are starting to work out like he does.

So anyway. There’s magic everywhere as long as we make it a habit to tune out the idiots who keep telling us that the sky is falling. Tough times, you bet. Some people having trouble, I understand.. Helping out those who need help, it’s a good thing to do..

No matter what the circumstances, keep pumping. Be clear about what you want and don’t let circumstances and negative people stop you from getting there.

Find your own magic. No one else will do it for you

P.S. I’m going to talk to a guy who gave up a very lucrative job to find his own magic. It’s a compelling story and he’s going to be on the phone lines tomorrow night telling us what he does to stay motivated by bringing good things into the world. He’s a tremendously gifted creator of fishing products and whether you are a fishing person or not, his story will inspire you.

Wide Eyed and Trying Hard   January 31st, 2009

As you’ve heard me say before I enjoy working with young people. It’s what I’ve been doing for the past 30 plus years.

Why do I like it? I believe it’s because of their energy and their willingness to try something new.

Yesterday I was over to my son’s old high school. The wrestling coach had invited me over to give the kids a Combat Endurance workout.

I knew some of the kids, but there were more that I didn’t know. Funny how even after my son being out of school for only ½ year, I felt that it was a new setting for me.

So I told the kids a few stories and off we went.

Now understand, of all athletes I believe that wrestlers are some of the most well conditioned athletes in all of sports. They need to be in order to put out the kind of energy and explosive power that wrestling demands.

Many of these kids were in great shape too but it was interesting to see how challenging a new type of exercise could be for them.

I explained to them that many of our country’s greatest wrestlers, including the great Dan Gable, were advocates of body weight training.

I explained to the kids that this type of exercise teaches you how to be in better control of your body,. It helps you understand the things you need work on and the things you are good at.

Putting it in a nutshell, I told them that the Combat Endurance Training workout can help you get into top shape and make you a more aware athlete.

I gave these guys a hard version of the workout because I knew that they like challenge. All in all they did very well and I enjoyed my time with them.

What I also found interesting while we went through the workout was the reaction of all the kids.

All of them went through the workout, but some of them got more out of it then others. Here’s what I mean.

As in any other group, some people give it their all while others sort of go through the motions. In addition to that you can almost always tell the energy level of a person by watching their facial expressions and the way they look at you when you talk to them.

Some of the kids were luke warm, some medium hot, and some were on fire. I expect that their reaction to this new knowledge might have a direct correlation to how they do on the mat as well as in other areas of their lives.

There is no substitute for effort, energy, and enthusiasm. These three working together have often overcome potential and greater numbers. There is no limit to what the spirit and belief can do.

Look into the eyes of the young and there you can see a fire.

A Clear Mind   January 22nd, 2009

Everything is so much easier when there is less clutter.

The same holds true for us adults as we get older.

It seems that there is a big move towards simplicity and returning to roots.

I’m sure that I’m like everyone else in that I function much more efficiently when I’m not trying to deal with 15 things at one time.

Spending time only on the thing that’s in front of me as I work and try to complete one particular task is the best way even though not the easiest way sometime.

It seems that not only are there many ideas invading my privacy as I work on the one, but sometimes the ideas that I’m working on don’t seem to have a clear solution because of some of my adult biases that I’ve learned over time.

It’s at that point when it’s important for me to be like a child.

On Sunday I was visiting with my friend Suki. We always have great conversations before she takes me through my weekly energy session.

In our conversation the subject of kids came up. She has recently been working on helping a few kids get over their migraine headaches.

She told me that kids need far less treatment in most cases because it’s so much easier for them to trust.

Adults on the other hand have all of this data, many times useless data, stored up in their heads that stops them from moving forward in life.

What she said is very true and I see it everyday in the Karate school. Kids are willing to try things that many adults hesitate to try. Even when adults try things many times there is a hesitation because they think too much. Not kids.

It’s only later in life that kids get clogged up with hesitation because they listen to too much of the junk that we adults are listening to and take as gospel.

Who of us knows our true potential? One thing is for sure. If for some reason you are unhappy with where you are in life there’s a good chance that you’ve been listening to the wrong radio channel in your head.

It’s time to break out, try another path, and try being a kid again.

P.S. You’ll be hearing more from Suki in a teleconference either in February or March. I’ll be sure to keep you posted. P.S.S. I talked to another person this past weekend who said that the Combat Endurance Training workout sounded just like what she needed. She just didn’t know if she could arrange the times. I believe that we can always make things happen if we only want them badly enough. Go to
