The Power Of Storytelling

Have you ever had a revelation. Something that came to you after some thought and effort that you may have heard before and which makes complete sense to you whether it’s because you’re older or it just clicked for some reason.

Let me let you in on my secret revelation.

I’ll tell it to you in a story.

When I was a young lad my family and I used to travel out west every summer for a two week trip. Back then I would mumble and grumble about having to sit in a car for two weeks.

I remember over one two week trip putting 10,000 miles on the car. On another trip we traveled through one of the west’s hotter then Hades, unforgiving deserts in a 1963 Chevy Impala. Didn’t have any air conditioning and it didn’t matter if you had the window open or closed because it was just as hot either way.

Now that I look back I realize that those were great days and because of my mom’s wanderlust I now too love to travel and go whenever I can. I do stop short of climbing in a Chevy without air conditioning to travel through the desert.

So where is all of this going. I’ll get there in a minute.

Lately I’ve been reading and listening to pieces from some very smart online marketers about how to really grow a relationship with the people who opt in to your emails.

Hang on, here comes the revelation. Just one more thing.

When my family and I got home from our family vacation my mom would always make me sit down and write a story about our trip that was published each summer in the Milwaukee Boys Club newsletter.
Come on mom, why do I have to do this. I’ve got better things to do.

I do remember feeling pretty cool when kids and Boys Club staff members would tell me how they enjoyed my story and how they wished they could have been there.

O.K. Here’s the revelation.

The stuff that I’ve been reading and listening to talks a lot about Storytelling.

That’s my revelation. I’ve heard it many times before from my mom and from some of the other great marketers who have told me about the importance of story telling to connect with your audience.

This time it really hit home. I finally realized how well it can be used and how I’m going to use it on my blog.

Mom must have been a lot smarter than I thought she was. She really knew the power of storytelling
Starting next week you’re going to go on a trip with me to Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. I went on that trip in January of 2005 and it was a great adventure.

Starting next Monday I’m going to recreate parts of that trip on my blog. This will be one of many stories that I’ll share with you over time and even though I’ve used some stories in the past I’m ready to ramp up.

If you love to travel then be sure to pull up a chair on Monday for my first day of Travels To Kilimanjaro. Hope you can go sometime.

Until then have a great weekend and look forward to the Packers crushing the Vikings. I’m not so sure about that but I’ve got to wear my colors. At the very least I hope that old Brett gets knocked around a bit.

Talk soon.
